Validation of project items

Topic updated 11-5-2007

Validation occurs automatically in GenWise Studio in response to actions such as project generation and certain changes made to templates. The validation process may cause indicators of Validation Messages to appear.

Validation can also be started manually. This can be useful in the following situations:

If you want to check whether some Validation Messages still apply, after you've tried to resolve them.
To bring up the Validation Messages dialog (see below).

To start validation manually, right-click a project node or a project item and choose Validate from the context menu.

ValidateProject

If all validations are passed for the validated item, you'll get a simple message popup informing you that the item is valid.

ValidationSuccess

If validations are not passed, the Validation Errors dialog is opened, listing all Validation Messages. There are two types of Validation Messages:

ValidtionError-Yellow

Yellow validation message icons indicate validation warnings. Validation warnings do not prevent project items from being used or generated. This indicates however that problems are expected to arise if you try to use the item in some advanced way.

ValidtionError-Red

Red validation message icons indicate the more serious validation errors. Validation errors must be fixed before the project can be successfully regenerated and/or saved.

Notice that some validation messages have a help icon: ValidationHelpIcon. If your computer has an internet connection, click this icon to open a page in your web browser with extra information that may clarify the validation message. These help icons link to pages in the online version of the GenWise Product Documentation.

You can use the Show Entity button to open configuration pages in GenWise Studio of the project items where the validation messages originate. If you click a Show Entitiy button, the Validation Errors dialog will be closed, and a configuration page such as a Template Options Page or a Project Options Page is activated.
