Intuit Tax Software: Complete Firm Guide
Compare ProConnect, ProSeries and Lacerte for your firm's tax workflow, including cloud versus desktop, return coverage, pricing and migration checks.

What is Intuit's professional tax software?
ProConnect Tax, ProSeries and Lacerte are professional tax-preparation products. They should not be confused with a general ledger, payroll platform or consumer tax-filing service. Your firm's choice should follow its return mix, reviewer workflow, technology environment and migration requirements—not a blanket label such as "best for small businesses."
This guide reviews Intuit's current product positioning as of September 7, 2026. The implementation questions are Genwise recommendations; they are not a guarantee that a particular product supports every client scenario.
Compare the operating model first
| Product | Vendor positioning | What your firm should test |
|---|---|---|
| ProConnect Tax | Cloud-based professional tax software accessed through a browser. | Browser workflow, team access and the bookkeeping-to-tax handoff. |
| ProSeries | Desktop professional tax software with forms-based entry. | Required edition, return coverage and the preparer/reviewer experience. |
| Lacerte | Desktop professional tax software positioned for complex returns and multiple preparers. | Representative complex returns, diagnostics and review procedures. |
Intuit also offers hosting for Lacerte and ProSeries. Hosted desktop software is a different operating model from cloud-native ProConnect. Sources: Intuit's comparison and professional tax software overview.
Intuit now presents ProConnect within Intuit Accountant Suite. For the broader firm-management context, see our QBOA vs. Intuit Accountant Suite guide. Suite access, tax-return purchases and optional services should be confirmed separately in your quote.
Return coverage matters more than a firm-size label
Build a requirements list from real client work:
- Individual, partnership, corporate, fiduciary and other return types your firm actually prepares.
- Federal, state and local jurisdictions, including multi-state complexity.
- Required forms, schedules, elections and industry-specific calculations.
- Prior-year access, amendments, carryforwards and source-data conversion.
- Diagnostics, review notes, permissions and the evidence retained at sign-off.
Do not accept broad claims that one product handles every complex return, or that another cannot serve an entire industry. Confirm the current tax-year form and e-file coverage with Intuit, then test representative cases. This replaces the earlier article's unsupported oil-and-gas exclusions and descriptions of Lacerte as payroll software.
Pricing: obtain a comparable written quote
The original 2022 prices are no longer a dependable purchasing reference. Use the current official pages for ProConnect, ProSeries and Lacerte, then request a quote for your actual scope.
Compare the same assumptions across proposals: tax year, return volumes and types, state coverage, users, hosting, signatures, conversion, training and renewal. Distinguish list price from an introductory promotion and ask what unused return purchases or future changes mean under the agreement. An advertised starting price is not your firm's total operating cost.
Test the whole tax workflow
Tax preparation is one stage in a larger process. Trace a pilot client through engagement acceptance, document collection, preparation, review, signatures, filing acceptance and final delivery. Identify which system owns each stage and who checks the handoff.
For example, a document uploaded to an intake portal is not necessarily ready for import; an imported number is not a reviewed tax position; and sending a signature request is not evidence of filing acceptance. Confirm each transition independently.
If your bottleneck is missing documents or unclear work ownership, changing tax software alone may not solve it. Review workflow mapping, Canopy implementation or Karbon implementation alongside your tax-software evaluation.
Plan the migration and adoption
- Inventory current users, files, integrations, tax years and retention needs.
- Confirm supported conversion scope and identify data that will require manual validation.
- Preserve the existing system and backup before a controlled pilot.
- Reconcile converted records and key carryforwards against approved source evidence.
- Train preparers and reviewers on actual engagements, including an exception case.
- Agree on acceptance criteria, a cutover window and a fallback before expanding.
Do not retire the prior software because a sample return opens successfully. Confirm access to historical records, required documents and the firm's ongoing retention responsibilities.
