    ProConnect vs. Drake vs. UltraTax

Compare ProConnect, Drake, and UltraTax CS by return coverage, deployment, conversion testing, review workflow, and total implementation cost.

    ProConnect vs. Drake vs. UltraTax

Professional tax software has to fit the returns your firm prepares and the way your team collects, reviews, files, and retains the work. ProConnect, Drake, and UltraTax CS are credible options, but no single product is automatically the right answer for every small or growing firm.

    Start with your return inventory

List return types, tax years, jurisdictions, volume, amended returns, and the situations that consume reviewer time. Include estate, trust, nonprofit, and multistate requirements where they actually occur. Ask each vendor to confirm coverage for the edition and tax year being quoted.

A product family’s form count is not proof that a particular online edition supports your next engagement.

    ProConnect: evaluate the Intuit workflow

Intuit’s professional tax lineup includes ProConnect for online preparation. For firms already using QuickBooks, the practical attraction is the connection between accounting and tax work.

Demonstrate the path from the client’s books to adjustments, return preparation, review, and delivery. Confirm which advisory, document, signature, and automation features require additional products or licenses. “Integrated” should mean fewer handoffs your staff can verify, not an assumption that every number flows automatically.

    Drake: distinguish desktop from online

Drake currently offers both Drake Tax Desktop and Drake Tax Online. They should be evaluated as distinct deployment choices, not described as one interchangeable feature set.

Test your actual return mix in the proposed edition. For hosted desktop use, confirm who manages updates, backups, access, printing, and support. For online use, confirm supported forms, conversion coverage, and the treatment of anything that still requires a different workflow.

UltraTax CS: evaluate the wider suite deliberately

UltraTax CS provides professional tax preparation with calculation, review, and data-sharing capabilities in the Thomson Reuters ecosystem.

That breadth can matter when your firm needs connected tax and supporting workflows. It can also create more implementation decisions. Request a scoped demonstration of your complex returns and the exact document, asset, portal, or other products included in the proposal.

    Compare the complete operating cost

    Cost areaQuestion to resolve
LicensingUsers, returns, jurisdictions, annual commitment, and renewal basis
DeploymentLocal hardware, hosting, remote access, updates, and support ownership
Client workflowCollection, signatures, payment, delivery, and archive costs
ConversionSupported years, carryovers, attachments, and items requiring manual review
AdoptionTraining time, template changes, and reviewer capacity during transition

Do not use a seasonal promotion or an old per-return price as a firm-wide budget. Obtain current written quotes on the same assumptions.

Prove the conversion before changing platforms

Choose a representative set of completed returns and compare the converted data with the originals. Check depreciation, basis, elections, carryovers, state information, and supporting documents where applicable. Have the firm’s tax professionals determine the acceptance criteria.

Run through collection, preparation, review, signatures, and an approved filing test without submitting a live return merely to test software. Preserve access to historical work and document how it will be retrieved after the old license ends.

    Where Genwise fits

Genwise helps design the surrounding workflow, configure the operating systems, and support adoption. Tax judgments and filing approval remain with the firm’s responsible professionals. We do not recommend a product solely from a feature count or describe one automation vendor as the only viable option.
