Cloudflare vs. GoDaddy for Accounting Firms

Cloudflare and GoDaddy are not interchangeable packages. Your domain registration, DNS, website hosting, web protection and mailboxes can be provided by different companies. Choosing a vendor starts with knowing who currently owns each layer.

Map the services first

A registrar transfer does not automatically require a hosting or email migration. Conversely, a nameserver change can affect services far beyond the homepage if the zone is incomplete.

Cloudflare: evaluate the edge and access requirements

Cloudflare's application services include web application firewall, DDoS protection, bot controls, DNS and content delivery capabilities. Their availability and limits depend on the selected products and plans.

For a public accounting-firm website, identify what should be cached, which form endpoints must remain dynamic and how legitimate visitors and crawlers are handled. A rule that blocks suspicious traffic can also interrupt a valid form or search crawler if configured too broadly.

Private staff access is a separate design question from a public marketing site. Do not put the public website behind an employee login merely because an access-control product is available.

GoDaddy: evaluate the actual package

GoDaddy Website Security includes firewall protection as well as malware scanning and cleanup. The previous description of its security model as only reactive cleanup was incorrect.

Confirm the hosting, backup, restoration, security and support services in your specific package. Do not assume domain registration includes every one of them, or that purchasing a security add-on removes the need to maintain the underlying website.

If email is purchased through a reseller, document who administers the tenant, licenses, account recovery and support. Mailbox capability and contractual suitability need their own review; they are not guaranteed by a website bundle.

Preserve email and connected services during change

Inventory the full DNS zone before any cutover. Identify website records separately from MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, verification and other service records. Have the authorized owner review the proposed changes.

Test the new website and certificate before moving traffic. Preserve the old hosting until the new path is independently verified and a rollback is available. Confirm that forms reach their approved destinations and that existing redirects still preserve important URLs.

This is especially important when a client portal or software subdomain is operated by another provider. It should not be moved or proxied casually as part of a marketing-site refresh.

Protect crawlability without weakening controls

Review public page responses, canonical URLs, robots instructions, sitemap and server-side content alongside firewall and bot rules. A robots allowance is not proof that a crawler can get through the edge.

Use actual response and request-log evidence where available. Do not allow arbitrary traffic simply because it claims a search-engine user agent, and do not promise search rankings from buying SSL or a vendor plan.

Compare total cost and responsibility

Get current renewal pricing for domains, hosting, security, logging, access services, email and support. The old fixed-price table is not retained as a current quote.

Assign an owner for backups, restoration tests, alerts and access reviews. Neither vendor selection nor a security badge establishes compliance for the firm.
