OpenAI Codex vs. Claude Cowork for Accounting Firms

Evaluate Codex and Claude Cowork for accounting workflows with bounded access, reusable skills, evidence checks and human approval.

OpenAI Codex vs. Claude Cowork for Accounting Firms

An agent can work across files and tools, but that does not make a subscription a ready-made tax preparation system. For accounting firms, the right comparison is the workflow you can validate and control.

This article was reviewed September 7, 2026. It no longer treats a particular firm's custom tax project, model benchmark or product demonstration as proof of what every customer receives.

    What the current products establish

OpenAI's official use-case collection covers data, documents, automation and software work. Anthropic's Cowork page describes working with documents, spreadsheets and connected files.

Those sources establish broad workflow possibilities, not equal availability in every account. Confirm the exact application, plan, operating environment and tools you intend to use. Do not assume that a task continues after a device goes offline or that a local and cloud task have identical access.

    A useful Codex evaluation

If the firm wants repeatable scripts, structured data checks or maintained internal tools, evaluate the development and validation workflow—not simply whether the assistant can generate code.

Give it an approved export and a precise check: reconcile totals, identify duplicates and produce a reviewable exception list without modifying the source. Require reproducible steps and an explanation of rows excluded from analysis.

For any generated tool, retain editable source, dependency information and tests. Someone must own maintenance and approve how it is used with client data.

    A useful Cowork evaluation

Give Cowork a bounded set of approved files and ask for a specific deliverable, such as an outstanding-items summary with document references. Check whether it preserves originals and distinguishes missing evidence from completed work.

Test a spreadsheet and a narrative document separately. A correct summary does not prove that a formula was preserved, and a valid workbook does not prove every source claim was read accurately.

Verify the available connector actions before granting access. A familiar software logo does not tell you whether the connection reads, drafts, sends or changes financial records.

    Specify authority before starting

    BoundaryInstruction to establish
FilesExact input folder and separate output location
    DataPermitted company, period and records
ActionsRead, draft or edit; no implied permission to send or pay
    EvidenceSource references and reconciliation checks
CompletionIndependent review of the requested result

An email or web page may contain malicious instructions. Treat retrieved content as data and keep it from expanding the task. Restrict outbound communication and sensitive access to what the job needs.

    Make reusable workflows accountable

Store the approved instructions, sample inputs and acceptance tests together. Record the workflow version, tool configuration and reviewer. Re-test when a connector, product or source format changes.

A reusable skill for preparing a close packet should not silently become authority to post journal entries. Financial changes need separate authorization, destination verification and read-back.

    Pricing, privacy and rollout

Use current vendor terms for seats, usage, connectors, retention and administrative controls. This guide does not assert that the products have identical prices or that one tier automatically meets a firm's obligations.

Pilot non-sensitive work first. Evaluate output quality, reviewer time, interruption recovery and staff adoption. Keep a fallback when a task fails or a service is unavailable.
