Kick vs. Puzzle vs. Digits: AI Ledgers
Compare Kick, Puzzle, and Digits through reconciliation, reviewer control, entity needs, integrations, and a controlled accounting-firm pilot.

An AI-native ledger is worth evaluating when it solves a demonstrated bookkeeping problem—not just because the category is new. Kick, Puzzle, and Digits take different approaches to accounting automation, and your firm still owns the review process behind the financial statements.
What each platform currently emphasizes
Kick describes automated transaction categorization, customizable rules, financial reporting, and multi-entity journal and transfer workflows. Those capabilities make entity handling and classification review useful subjects for a live demonstration.
Puzzle positions its accounting platform around startups and accounting firms, including cash and accrual accounting. A firm supporting startup clients should test the actual revenue, expense, and period-end schedules it needs rather than relying on a “startup-ready” label.
Digits presents a general ledger with automated bookkeeping, month-end close, bill pay, invoicing, and financial reporting. Its current site explicitly addresses both businesses and accounting firms. Evaluate its current accountant offering rather than relying on older descriptions of its service model.
These are vendor-described capabilities, not Genwise benchmarks or guarantees of accuracy.
Compare the accounting work, not the AI label
| Requirement | What a reviewer should see |
|---|---|
| Transaction classification | Source evidence, the proposed account, corrections, and a usable history |
| Cash and accrual reporting | The required basis and a clear explanation of timing differences |
| Multiple entities | Separate books, intercompany treatment, and any consolidation limitations |
| Month-end control | Reconciliation evidence, unresolved items, period locking, and reopening |
| Data portability | Trial balance, general ledger, attachments, and historical exports |
Do not infer identical capabilities from similar product terms. Multi-entity visibility is not necessarily consolidated financial reporting. Automated categorization is not the same as an approved close.
Keep the surrounding stack in view
Inventory payroll, payments, expense tools, sales systems, tax preparation, and reporting before considering a move. For each proposed connection, confirm supported records, sync direction, timing, permissions, and exception behavior.
A ledger migration that breaks the payroll reconciliation or removes a report your tax team depends on is not an improvement. Existing QuickBooks or Xero workflows may remain the better fit for some clients.
Run a controlled comparison
Select an approved test client or anonymized dataset with a completed period and known balances. Reproduce that period without changing the production books. Include refunds, transfers, payroll, an unusual transaction, and any accruals relevant to the engagement.
Measure preparation time, reviewer corrections, missing records, and time to obtain the required reports. Ask what posts automatically, what can be stopped, and who can reverse an error. Do not grant payment authority merely to test reporting.
Use the same acceptance criteria across all three vendors. A polished demo and a high automation percentage are not substitutes for reconciled balances.
Commercial and security questions
Request current firm pricing, client ownership terms, support scope, migration help, and export rights. Confirm plan-specific capabilities directly. Historical free tiers, referral incentives, or provider relationship claims are not reliable purchasing terms.
Review access controls, auditability, retention, and current assurance documentation before supplying client data. Decide who will maintain rules and train new staff after the pilot.
Choose a repeatable operating model
Genwise helps firms connect workflow design, implementation, and adoption. The decision may be one ledger for a defined client segment, a deliberate exception policy, or improvements to the system already in place.
